Below are shown some actual screen-shots from an Apple iPhone 3G's PDF viewer. Due to the iPhones two possible orientations – vertical and horizontal – sub-pixel rendering is not used in the rendering system. Further, the pixel density of the iPhone display is 163 ppi – quite a bit higher than the displays of personal computers.
On the current range of Apple Macintosh computers the standard text rendering is sub-pixel rendering. These following screen-shoots are from are Adobe FDKO auto-hinted CFF font files, rendered using the OS native rendering of Mac OS 10.5.7.
Rendering on the Microsoft Windows platform still requires extensive manual hinting to render satisfactory.
